Interviewees stressed the role of mindfulness cultivated through meditation for maintaining physical health. The practice of a vegetarian diet, temperance, monogamy, and maintaining the five precepts were also mentioned, as were spreading compassion and gratitude. Bathhouses are utilized to heal, as is the undertaking of a period of abstinence from food and shelter while receiving prayers and blessings from monks. Holy water blessed by monks is also used to purify or heal the body.
